Suomessa

Just having won the German world music Award RUTH, Gankino Circus went to Finland for several weeks in 2019. In order to get to the bottom of the Finnish heart, the four of them rowed across Lake Saimaa before they made the pilgrimage to Kaustinen, the mecca of the Finnish folk and world music scene. Three years and numerous days in the recording studio later, Gankino Circus now release their new album Suomessa, a musical confession of their love for this large country in north-eastern Europe.

With mystic sounds, vigorous folk songs and beautiful instrumental music, Gankino Circus present a truly Nordic side of their character. Sonic landscapes pulsating with magic guitars and enchanting Finnish vocals make the listener dive into the wide lands of the north, only to resurface to glorious midsummer parties. This time, the typical Gankino Circus sound of accordion, clarinet, guitar and drums is extended by a vibraphone which glimmers like a northern light above the album.

In addition to the four Gankino members, many of their friends from Finland can be heard on Suomessa: Sandhja, singer and Finnish ESC participant, banjo virtuoso Slack Bird from Jyväskylä as well as Uusikuu’s Laura Ryhänen and Mikko Kuisma.

Following the release of Suomessa by Nordic Notes on 16 September, the band will be on tour across Germany to present the live show accompanying the album. “Gankino Circus in Finland” - completely different this time, yet unmistakably Gankino Circus: Nordic sounds and virtuosic world music, one half of a boat on stage and lots of hilarious stories.
